| Education/work/clubs/organizations | Born in Melrose, he was the son of the late Edward D. and Viola M. (Howard) Walls. During WW II from 1941-45, Mr. Walls served as a Sergeant in the US Army 8th Air Force in the European Theatre including the Air Offensive at Normandy, Northern France, Germany and the Ardennes. After his honorable discharge he earned a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University in 1948. A registered professional engineer, Mr. Walls was an expert in flammable liquids and hazardous chemicals. He was first employed by Factory Mutual Engineering from 1948 to 1962 where he worked closely with large industrial fire insurance companies concerned with complex chemical plants and the aviation industry.
In 1962 he went to work for the National Fire Protection Association in Boston and Quincy until his retirement in 1984, developing fire codes and educational programs and films to prevent the loss of life and property due to fire, and appeared before the US Congress, federal, state and local governmental agencies. He served as Secretary of the NFPA Technical Committees on Liquefied Natural Gas and Liquefied Petroleum Gases, and as a Staff Liaison for committees including Cutting and Welding Practices, internal combustion engines, fumigation, and oxygen enriched atmospheres. He also worked with and held chair positions in conjunction with national standards committees including the National Standards Association, the American Gas Association, the American Welding Society, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and represented the public interest on the US Dept. of Transportation Technical Pipeline Safety Standards Committee. Mr. Walls was a charter member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, N.E. Chapter, and was an honorary life member of the Fire Marshal's Association of North America.

| Survivors | In addition to his wife, he is survived by 5 children, George Walls and wife Bonnie of Maynard, Roberta Walls of Littleton, Elinor Walls and companion Leonard P. Curcio of Townsend, Maryann Walls and companion Brian Ashe of Clinton, and Mark Walls and wife Lisa of Plymouth. He was the grandfather of 10, and great-grandfather of 12. Mr. Walls was the brother of the late Ann Dickenson Maglione. |
