| Education/work/clubs/organizations | Born and raised in Maynard, he was the son of the late Angelo and Mary (Puleo) Costanzo. Mr. Costanzo was remembered as a hard worker throughout his life. As a teenager he attended the Waltham Trade School, studying machinery, woodworking and tool making, and worked as a farm hand at Cavicchio's Farm in Sudbury, planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops. He joined the US Army during WW II, and by the age of 17 was on the front lines in Europe with H Company, 30th Division, 120th Infantry Regiment, Second Battalion. Captured at Mortain, France, he was a POW in Moosberg and spent time in solitary confinement before being liberated. Upon his return to Maynard after the war, Mr. Costanzo volunteered on the Maynard Police Department, and worked construction on the Watertown Arsenal project. He began his career with General Motors in 1948 on the assembly line, moving up to lineman, trainer, and utility man. He loved to cook pizza and pasta dishes, and would often bring hot pepper and fritata dishes to work and send them through with the automobiles during the paint baking process so he and his friends could enjoy a hot dish at the end of the line.
Mr. Costanzo was a member of the former V.F.W. Post # 1812 in Maynard and more recently V.F.W. Post 638 in Hudson. He was also a member of St. Bridget's Parish in Maynard, the Maynard Lodge of Elks, and the Italian Social Club. For over 50 years he marched in Maynard's Memorial Day Parade, and enjoyed bringing his children and grandchildren to the local cemeteries to decorate the graves of veterans. He was very active with his late wife, Rose, in raising funds for the Franciscan Missions and traveling to their locations in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, and for the Divine Word Missions in Ghana. After his retirement the Costanzos traveled worldwide, with the most meaningful trip to revisit France where he was captured as a young soldier. He also enjoyed spending time crafting wooden toys, furniture, and novelty and prank items to entertain family and friends, and it gave him great pleasure to cultivate his garden and provide fresh produce to everyone. Most importantly, he loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle. |
